Mission: To provide food to those in need within eleven counties of northwest Pennsylvania while creating awareness and educating the communities on the realities of hunger.
Current Projects/Needs: Second Harvest is the largest nonprofit food distribution organization in northwest Pennsylvania and the only food bank in the region. With 60,000 square feet of available space, Second Harvest solicits, receives, inventories, stores and distributes food and grocery items to 298 member agencies that directly serve people facing hard times in 11 counties. Member agencies include traditional food pantries, mobile food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and weekend BackPack Programs as well as such non-emergency agencies as child care centers, group homes and drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers.
Holiday projects include Thanksgiving and Christmas box distributions. Second Harvest provides food to member agencies at a very low service fee and delivers to member agencies outside of Erie County. All recipients receive food assistance free of charge. The recipients include unemployed and underemployed workers, older citizens, people with disabilities, families and individuals caught in crisis situations, and children.
In addition, Second Harvest distributes a box of USDA food monthly to 2,612 low-income seniors at 144 partner organizations in 11 counties through the Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Second Harvest distributed nearly 13 million pounds of food during our most recent fiscal year. Through our agencies, Second Harvest serves an estimated 167,700 unduplicated individuals each year. Of this total, 29 percent – or 48,430 – are children under 18 years old. In any given week, about 11,200 households receive emergency food assistance through Second Harvest member agencies. (The above statistics are from Hunger in America 2014, the last available Feeding America hunger study results.) Second Harvest serves the following counties: Cameron, Clarion, Clearfield, Crawford, Elk, Erie, Forest, Jefferson, McKean, Venango and Warren.
